Laparoscopic surgery is fast becoming one of the surgeon's favourite tools. It has revolutionised certain types of operation and limits the damage needed to be caused to surrounding tissues.

It demands a whole new set of skills from the surgeon but once mastered quickly provides so many benefits to both the patients and surgical teams.

Obviously, reducing the amount of tissue damage means a far quicker healing process and a much more complete and unobtrusive scar compared to the traditional method of long incisions and stitching.

When used during lap band placement, it allows patients to be in and out of hospital very quickly and back to work within just a few days.

Laparoscopic surgery does require a very expensive investment in equipment, but this combined with the finer skills needed by surgeons does make it a very specialist but worthwhile approach to surgery.
